AC breakers can be used as a protective device in grid applications for 3.3 kV, 6 kV and 11 kV. These devices can be used as part of a soft power processing unit installed between two medium voltage substations, where high switch-off speed is required.
In case of a short circuit, the current increases rapidly, driven by the voltage and limited by the loop inductance. When exceeding the defined current threshold, the breaker trips in less than 10 μs, limiting the maximum current to a non-destructive level. The energy stored in the loop inductance is dumped into protective overvoltage devices within the breaker.
